The Home Aquaponics System Uses Recycled Materials
November 16th 2011 -
I set up a home aquaponics system in my garage last week using a bunch of scrap materials. I built fruit and vegetable grow beds using the top part of an old charcoal grill, which I was planning on tossing out. Also, I was able to use an old metal barrel as a fish tank, but it is lined with copper and I needed to make sure that I covered all of that copper with a durable food grade plastic. You can get a liner like this right at home depot, and it should cost about five to ten dollars. I was able to pick up a huge supply of recycled food grade plastic liners at a Michael’s Craft’s store around the corner from my house for cheap. The food grade liners do end up ripping and tearing every once in a while, and it is much better to just use 3 or 4 liners from the outset to avoid having to take out the water, or waiting until the fish in it get sick from the copper.
